That is a stupid question... here's the thing... dumpster diving is a SPORT... thus a large part of the fun is HUNTING for places that don't have compactors and finding the "hidden gems" that throw great stuff away. No one here is going to tell you where to go, you have to use your head, get in the car, drive around and find them yourself. Have you not noticed that people tend to talk about WHAT they find but never precisely WHERE they find it? Why on earth would anyone want to give away their hot spots and thereby increase their competition!?!? Think about it.
Because maybe for some people it is more than a sport, it is a way of life. Not everyone lives in a nice home and has food all the time. Dumpster Diving for some people is how they eat their meals, get their clothes and generally survive. So sometimes it is nice to share.
But it is always nice to keep that one REALLY good spot for yourselves, although I see nothing wrong with sharing some other spots just for the sake of community.
Yeah, I've seen a lot of people help other people out. It's not necessarily something that people have to be selfish about. I'm lucky enough to have the things I need; however, I'd rather go about getting them by diving rather than using the regular, common consumerist approach. I have a few friends who survive off of everything they dumpster.. and they're vegan. I don't see that being too easy.
If you're using dumpster diving to survive (not just the occasional bit of food when cash is slim) and you still have a net connection and an LJ account, maybe your priorities are in the wrong places. I have a place to live, a car that runs most of the time and have food but that doesn't mean I'm well off or have nice things.
If you're so down and out that every meal and all your clothes have to come from the trash maybe it's time to grow up and get a job.
If you get your food and clothes out of the trash out of some "political statement", then that's fine too, whatever floats your boat.
It's not being rude, it's being honest.
Yikes, I am not sure if you actually thought before you posted this, so I am going to assume that you just were in a hurry and it wasn't just you being ignorant.
First of all, the internet and LJ are both FREE. You can get on the net at any number of cyber cafes, public libraries and friends houses. There was a guy named Thor Antrim whos family was homeless for almost a year and he updated his site (which was given to him for free) and his LJ fairly often.
That "grow up and get a job" was an incredibly ignorant thing to say. There are people that live in Silicon Valley that have full times jobs that pay $50K a year and they are homeless because the cost of living is so high. You can easily have a job in Indiana and still be homeless, as in most places require a credit check and/or a downpayment. And if you are living off of mininum wage and just have enough to survive some food and necessities here and there, then you won't have enough for that.
I doubt you know anyone who has ever been homeless as it sounds like you just have no idea what it means or entails. So just please think before you make posts like that as it is very unnappreciated.
I appreciate your honesty, but a lot of your post came across as someone who has not taken the time to think about the subject before they posted.
Yup, they're free but the time spent playing on the net or updating your website could be used to find employent. I'm not a complete dick, I understand that some people can't get a job for certain reasons (medical, mental etc).
If you live in Silicon Valley and get paid $50K, perhaps you should move some place that you can afford. Please don't assume that I am ignorant or that I have never known a homeless person. I've known people from all walks of life.
The point of this thread is not about being homeless. If you guys want to share your good spots, that's cool with me. I've been diving since '95 and it's always been a first come first serve basis. I don't dive for food. I'll gladly tell you tons of places to find food.
If you're going to be a bitch, why don't you keep your comments to yourself?

look, I just pointed out it was a dumb question, why should I be blamed for your extreme sensitivity? As far as the "holier than thou attitude" of shinkarasu, I think you missed the point... I will just as soon take something from a dumpster that I need than leave it there because some homeless person MIGHT come by and need it... its first come first serve in this world... no matter what your position... so yes, for me diving is a sport... does that mean I can't play simply because others might need it more than I? With that logic I might as well not ever enjoy a meal either because god knows there are tons of starving people out there... please.
All I was saying is that you should have a little more fortitude and willingness to work toward what you want vs. expecting people to just tell you where to go... and at this point I am more than ready to draw you a map!
It was simply a question. No one else attacked saying how dumb it was. Usually these communities are for sharing whether it's what you found or where. I've been in other dumpster diving communities, and they say straight out what they found and where. It's helpful; however, of course not everything is the same everywhere.
I understand how you wouldn't want to point out all of 'your spots' to people because you may treasure them. This is understandable and may vary from person to person. All you had to do was not answer the question.
You can't just go around pointing out what everyone does, says, or acts as being stupid. I mean, you could, but that's a nice way to be a very close minded person... You can be close minded if you want.
Not everyone sees dumpster diving as being a sport. Some people are more than happy to share with others where they may find success. This question was directed towards anyone willing to share.. not towards anyone wanting to be stingy about it.
I'm glad you've found a sport out of this. I know plenty of people who do it because they refuse to put up with any amount of consumerism. Some of them do it because that's all they can get by on to survive. This is something that not everyone is willing to do, and it's something that most people have to be close minded to even consider. This isn't something that people need to be 'shooting' other people down for if they just ask for some advice.

I didn't attack you. I simply pointed out that I felt your QUESTION lacked common sense. As this is a forum for communicating I didn't feel the need to censor myself based on the notion that you might not like the answer. When you ask a question to an open forum such as this, you must realize that anyone has the right to answer. In fact, I think you are the one doing the attacking... after all you are the one calling me a "bitch."
Regardless, my reasons for diving are my own. Simply because I may not be on a political soapbox making a statement against consumerism and I don't feel like sharing my successful locations with you doesn't make me close-minded, it just makes me selfish... which I have no problem with.
I'm glad you have no problem with being selfish.
This is stupid.
Oh come now, I wouldn't say "holier than thou." Although it does sound good. I just posted what I felt needed said. We are all fans of the same thing, so why should we hoard to ourselves? I like people who dumpster dive, so I want to share. My mother always taught me to share...and play well with others.
Hmmm, I forgot where I was going with this. Yeah dumpster diving and I still think you and redrevolt are both pretty cool...and also ilikethebeesknees.
